Hygge Evening Routines | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge
If you are following my 30 days of Hygge challenge, welcome back! If this is the first time joining me, welcome! Once I discovered what is Hygge life, I decided I needed to test if my typical routines aligned with a Hygge lifestyle. I’m on Day 15 of the 30 days of Hygge challenge and today’s challenge was to create an evening routine.
The evening routine was to center around relaxation. I wasn’t tasked to work on the endless things moms feel they need to do before going to bed. “All the things” needed to wait for another day.
The evening routine was to start an hour or two before going to bed. It was meant to create relaxation and allow the “busy mom brain” to slow down enough prior to going to bed. If you are able to do that then your sleep will be deeper, providing more rest and healthier sleep.
Hygge Evening Routines
Once reading the task for the day, I was thrilled that this wouldn’t be a stretch for me. My evening routines for years have aligned nicely with this Hygge challenge.
Often my husband and I will spend a bit of the evening watching a show or two together. Usually, the show is something we both enjoy. It’s a mini-date night. However, it’s the self-care evening routines that help me relax enough to get a good night’s sleep.
Studies have shown that there is are ultimate stress-busting hacks that anyone can use in a Hygge evening routine:
- reading
- music
- hot drink
- walk
- video games
Last night, the family took a walk in the evening as part of the Hygge challenge, after all an active lifestyle is Hygge. Generally, my evening routines include reading or video games in the comfort of my Hyggekrog.
Every year, I create a wish list of books that I want to read. This year’s list of books is a list of books that will change your life, but I also add in “fun” books that are fictional. The fictional worlds and characters take me away from the worries of life much easier than a personal development book. If I’m not up to a personal development book, I crack open a “fun” book and enter the other world that isn’t my real life.
In stressful times or times where I’m struggling with personal growth, I will often use a journal to help me work through my feelings. This gratitude journal brings a positive perspective on my life. I recommend journaling to my clients so they can track their progress and words that they are using as they journal their days.
If the words are consistently negative then that will reflect in their life. Whereas if they are able to find a positive opportunity in those negative experiences then they will be able to grow from it. Our thoughts impact our success.
The key to creating your evening routine is to make relaxation the focus. Put tasks aside and doing something that will relax you. The stress-busting hacks mentioned above will be a great start. If you are still having difficulty winding down, meditation and candlelight might help set the mood.
Do you have an evening routine? What is your favorite?
