Using Candles for Hygge Life | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge

Sharing is caring!

I set a goal this year to dig deeper into Hygge life. As part of that, I needed to learn what is Hygge life. As part of this journey, I decided to commit myself to 30 days of Hygge. When I made the commitment to 30 days of Hygge I was stressed and worried that I’d be adding to my already busy schedule. However, Britta Olsson, author of Hygge: The Danish Art of Happiness, starts Day 1 with a simple task. Day one of the challenge is using candles for Hygge life.

Sounds simple right?

It is simple and I loved that!!!!

I thought the task would be to use scented candles however, that wasn’t the case. Britta surprised me a little here. I’ve used scented candles for years to help slow life down for us, and create a calming effect in the house. However unscented candles got pushed to the back of the storage.

30 Days of Hygge Progress

Day 1 was to add non-scented candles around the room to create a cozy ambiance. Her challenge was to do this every day to further help the benefits of Hygge.

I dug into my candle storage and found the boxes of candles I hadn’t used for years. I even found candle holders given to us for wedding gifts 26 years ago. My daughter had made a bunch of tea light holders so I collected those as well.

I then filled a small side table, gifted to me from my Great Grandmother with as many as I could fit, and I started lighting the candles. My husband had a look of “she’s crazy” but went with it.

The candles stayed lit the entire evening and we would often pause our evening to just look at the flickering flames. It was calming. Even now, as I write this I have them lit and find myself relaxed as I work.

Using Candles for Hygge Life

Candlelight has a calming effect on the brain. The low light provides a feeling of slowing life down. The gentle flicker of the flame provides a natural focal point for centering your thoughts and allowing you to be more present at that moment.

As I glance over to the flickering flames, I’m able to slow my “busy mom brain” and take a moment to breathe deeply.

Stress rolls off my back and a feeling of peace and relaxation enters throughout my body.

I find it astounding that something so simple as a non-scented candle could bring so many benefits into our home. These forgotten candles won’t be forgotten any longer.

If you don’t have any candles at home, here are a few supplies you can pick up on Amazon.  Different heights of candles add to the ambiance. Start with a small surface like me, or go big and scatter the room. The decision is yours, but I highly recommend using candles for Hygge life.

Are you going to join me in this 30 days of Hygge?
