What is a Hyggekrog | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge
If you are following my journey to figure out what is Hygge and my 30 days of Hygge, you will know that yesterday I started using candles for Hygge life. Today I was challenged to create a Hyggekrog. Ummm, what is a hyggekrog?
That is not a term I’ve heard before. Thankfully it was explained in the challenge. Phew!
After reading the task of the day, I was surprised to figure out I had one already. It was my favorite spot every night. Yep, you guessed it! I’m a “Sheldon” when it comes to my comfy spot to sit in the evenings (Big Bang Theory Fans will understand).
If you aren’t a Big Bang Theory fan, then keep reading and I’ll explain what is a hyggekrog. Even if you are a fan, keep reading because you may get some ideas on how to create one just for you.

30 Days of Hygge Progress
I was again surprised to find that Day 2 wasn’t anything that I needed to figure out how to do. I have my favorite spot that I gravitate to daily and even though those spots changed over the years, the habit remained the same. I’m sure you will be able to relate!
It is the perfect angle for looking out the front window, watching the big tree swaying in the wind. I have a side table that can hold my coffee cup, some candles (now a lot of candles because of Day 1 of this challenge), and some books on a lower shelf.
I keep a cozy blanket or two on the couch close by and you will often see me curled up under one of these at any point in the evening, all year round. It is part of my evening routine.
Even now on my day off work, my day started out sitting in this very spot with my coffee in complete silence. This is my perfect start to the day, always. It heals my mind and helps give it rest from being over-stimulated with noise and distractions. If you haven’t tried it, I recommend you do it.
What is a Hyggekrog?
According to the challenge I’m following in Hygge: The Danish Art of Happiness by Britta Olsson, a hyggekrog is a comfortable place to sit either in the kitchen or the living room. It’s a cozy nook, window sill, or comfortable furniture that is typically by a window. A place that you can calmly look outside while drinking your tea or coffee and relax. It generally includes pillows and a cozy blanket to add more comfort.
When discovering what is Hygge, the Rule of 5 became the building blocks to creating Hygge in the home. In that article, I explain that the Rule of 5 is our 5 senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell.
To create your own Hyggekrog you need the following:
- A nook, window sill wide enough to sit, or your favorite piece of furniture placed by a window or even set in a quiet location.
- Add pillows and your favorite blanket for comfort.
- Candles or the view of nature adds to the relaxing ambiance.
- No electronics, just the sound of nature.
- Something to help you relax, like a book or a hot drink.
Now picture yourself relaxing at your Hyggekrog. You have your favorite blanket over your legs as you are looking outside at the falling rain. Listen to the gentle rhythm of the raindrops hitting the window, as your hands are wrapped around your favorite mug and you are taking in the aroma of your favorite tea.
How about creating your own Hyggekrog today?
