Allergies And Gut Health | My Health Journey Update
I didn’t know about gut health or Dysbiosis a year ago but suffered from seasonal and food allergies, among many other symptoms. Studies are showing a strong link between many allergies and gut health. But is this true? I’m sharing my personal health journey experience after seeking help with my own gut health.
When I started this health journey I had gained back most of the weight I had lost a few years back. Surprisingly enough I didn’t start the health journey to lose weight again.
In all honesty, it was the excessive health issues that were adding up that triggered me to seek out a solution. I was tired of treating symptoms with medicine and nothing getting better. In fact, other symptoms would arise causing me to feel even worse.
Before I give you my health journey update, I want to share with you my allergy and gut health experience.

This article is based upon my own personal experience and health journey. I highly recommend seeking medical advice for your own health journey.
Allergies And Gut Health
Gut Health has a medical term, called Dysbiosis, and it is one of the most common health issues in North America today. However many health care systems make it difficult for doctors to take the time to see beyond the symptoms. I’m a firm believer that we know ourselves the best and by educating ourselves we can seek the help we need from the experts until we have more answers.
For more information on the long list of health issues linked to Dysbiosis (Gut Health), check out my article on how gut health affected my initial weight loss journey. The list is truly shocking!
Since doing the initial research into my own gut health, I have found studies that showed that the gut microbiome (gut health system) when imbalanced can be the cause of some food and environmental allergies. These studies provide hope for those of us that want to “stem the rising tide of the food allergy epidemic” (The National Center for Biotechnology Information).
The study included the most common food allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish) and non-foods (drug, bee sting, dander, asthma, seasonal, eczema). It concluded that “American adults with allergies, especially but not exclusively to nuts and seasonal pollen, have lower richness and altered composition of their gut microbiota”.
What does that mean? It means there is a strong scientific link to allergies and gut health (dysbiosis).
My Health Journey Update
I have developed food allergies, seasonal and environmental allergies over the years. When I was growing up we had a large lilac hedge behind our house and us kids would spend hours playing in the lilac hedge.
As I got older, I developed an allergy to lilacs. I’d walk by a lilac tree or bush and instantly have nasal congestion and a headache. The home that we bought this past year has two lilac bushes by the front door and a huge (gorgeous) lilac tree in the backyard.
I had visions of having to rip those out in the spring or not enjoying the time spent in my own yard. Thankfully I was surprised with improved tolerance to lilacs this year. But how? What did I change?
The only change I did was to improve my gut health.
Last January, I start taking action against my health symptoms by taking specific Plexus products to help rebalance my gut health, and by spring I was able to enjoy my lilacs. I didn’t get headaches and never got a head cold or sinus infection at all. I was truly surprised and very happy with the results.
It was being able to enjoy my own yard that had me researching why my allergies improved this year. I had seen noticeable differences in other health issues, including losing 15 lbs, but the allergies truly were a nice benefit. It gave me the freedom to enjoy my spring and summer again.
These specific Plexus products helped improve my tolerance to the allergies that I had developed over the years. Are my allergies gone? I’m not sure. I’d need to get retested by a medical professional to know for sure. However, it’s my personal experience that improving my own gut health improved my allergies and my ability to enjoy the outdoors again. Science has proven a strong connection between allergies and gut health, and my own personal experiences have confirmed that it is possible to improve allergies by improving gut health.
