The Importance of Grounding and Why Hygge Helps

Sharing is caring!

What the heck is grounding anyway? Today’s topic covers the importance of grounding and what it is specifically. Further down you will find common symptoms when grounding is needed, ways to ground, and I will explain why Hygge helps. Although, if you are a Hygge Lifestyle lover you will see the connection quickly.

We live in a world where shoes cover the feet, busy and hustle are encouraged, and pills cure the disconnected feelings and inflammation within the body. Though, it never used to be that way. I remember running in the grass with bare feet. There are memories of neighbors dropping by and life slowing down to connect with friends. Baths weren’t just a luxury, they were moments of deep reflection and relaxation.

For some reason, it became the norm to try and fit more things in the day. Speedy showers replaced the baths. Hiking or being in nature became a vacation event instead of a daily necessity. The busy became the norm, with an occasional moment to connect with nature. Would this disconnect be the cause of so much dis-ease in the world? What is the importance of ground?

The Importance of Grounding

It all starts with this…Energy is Everything and Experience is Energy. We are electric beings and so is nature. Science has proven that Earth is like a gigantic battery, providing a natural subtle electrical charge for nature, animals, and humans to use. An article from the University of Maryland explains how the cells in our bodies are in a resting state and have a negative charge, but when they are interacting with outside energy, nature, they become charged and create active potential energy. This is because nature is the positive charge that helps us activate the potential energy within us.

The importance of grounding starts with our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing and continues with our personal spiritual journey. Why in this way? Spending large amounts of time in the heavens can impact your physical, mental, and emotional well-being if you aren’t grounding. I’ll explain this in another article, but for now please note the energy we use to connect with the Divine is potential energy and if it isn’t in balance with Earth’s positively charged loving energy then imbalance happens within our wellbeing.

Imbalance happens in the extremes. Too much of a good thing, while ignoring other needs for balance, creates an imbalance in energies. Grounding helps us become more centered and stable in many ways. It is literally the foundational support to help us be more present and mindful of our wellbeing: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Energetically, grounding helps us:

  • create healthy boundaries,
  • connect with foundational values,
  • feel more stable emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually,
  • connect with our dreams and a big vision for our life,
  • deepen our connection with ourselves and others,
  • and strengthen our connection with the Divine.

Symptoms of an Overactive or Underactive Nervous System

Anytime we are in the extremes for long periods of time, we can start to impact our nervous system in unhealthy ways. I often call these extremes our shadows. They are the moments that introduce struggle and the feeling of powerlessness or keep us on edge ready for a fight.

Common signs that imbalance is happening:

  • anxiety
  • panic attacks
  • depression
  • habitual worry loops
  • insomnia
  • breathlessness
  • powerlessness
  • palpitations
  • inability to sit still
  • jittery
  • poor digestion
  • fear
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • infections
  • vascular disorders and inflammation
  • degeneration disorders (MS, Parkinsons, ALS, Alzheimers)
  • chronic headaches, epilepsy, dizziness
  • loss of muscle strength
  • difficulty concentrating
  • bladder infections, urinary tract infections

Dis-ease is an imbalance of our energies in some form and for many reasons, but one of the main causes is disconnecting from nature and not using its natural ability to rebalance the energies within us. Science has proven that nature provides a positive charge to our negatively charged cells. This doesn’t mean that we are naturally negative, in the poor attitude kind-of-way. It just means that when we connect with nature we naturally create movement within our cells and can release and let go easier. Our cells literally vibrate and wash away the muck we collected in our day. It can be as simple as that, but if you still aren’t convinced of the importance of grounding check out this video:

Ways to Ground and Why Hygge Helps

Many people think the Hygge Lifestyle is about coziness and comfort, but the root word Hug, an old Norse term, literally means “soul, mind, and consciousness”. Within the Hygge Lifestyle, you will find core principles that center around finding ways to connect with nature. Could this be for balancing wellbeing? I believe that it is part of the reason. I also believe that bringing balance to your well-being deepens your connection with your soul, mind, and consciousness. So, yes Hygge is a foundational lifestyle that helps bring balance to your wellbeing.

There are many ways to ground or connect with nature via the Hygge Lifestyle. While some of these have a stronger impact than others, the combination and intention matter as well. For example, you can have a cd playing with nature sounds, but the grounding effects will feel stronger if you are consciously connecting to the sounds you are experiencing. In other words, if they are in the background and you are busy doing other things you will have fewer results than if you are sitting and envisioning yourself being in nature while listening to that sound therapy.

Likewise, if you are standing in nature and aren’t believing that it helps reset the nervous system, the results will appear to be minor compared to fully connecting to the healing opportunity available at that moment. The consciousness connection is key to grounding efficiently. It doesn’t take long at all to feel results when you are consciously using grounding to help rebalance.

Ways to Ground

There are many ways to ground. I’ve found physical contact with Earth is the most efficient, but I also live in Canada where snow is naturally part of the seasonal weather. Getting creative and learning to ground my energies often through various methods has helped immensely. There was a moment of my journey where I had been doing deep shadow clearing, where I was shedding large amounts of beliefs and shifting my life in massive ways. During that time, I needed to ground lots as my energy increased drastically.

In those moments, I didn’t have a grounding mat, and there was snow on the ground. During a moment of desperation to counteract a dizzy spell, I found potting soil and poured it in a cake pan, then placed my feet in the dirt. Instantly my energies balanced and I wasn’t dizzy any longer. During a hike in nature, I found myself dizzy as I was absorbing large amounts of potential energy from the heavens. I simply touched a tree and found myself grounded and no longer dizzy. Grounding is key to one’s well-being, being in balance.

Here are a few ways you can ground:

  • activities in nature: hiking, skiing, snow-shoeing, swimming, walks along a beach
  • placing your bare feet on earth
  • touching plants and trees, including gardening
  • listening to birds
  • feeling the wind in your hair
  • catching snowflakes or feeling the rain on your skin
  • watching the wind in the trees
  • listening to the rain
  • bathing or showering to relax and reflect
  • bare feet on wooden floors
  • holding a natural material object: wooden carving, stone crystal
  • touching a cool metal handle
  • using and connecting to natural elements of decor
  • using your hyggekrog to help you connect with nature
  • listening to nature sounds via sound therapy
  • standing and leaning against a wall while focusing on the support you feel through your feet and hands
  • experiencing the beauty of a sunrise, sunset, or the moon and stars in their glory

You Aren’t Alone

The world is full of people that are feeling disconnected or have found themselves disconnecting from themselves or others in various ways. The energies we are all feeling are powerful on many levels. The vibrations have increased and if you are one that has tried hard to avoid your feelings or find yourself disconnecting from them, then feeling imbalanced is a common situation for you.

The good news is, you can reset the nervous system and let the shit go by grounding your energies. I literally envision all the muck I’ve held onto (beliefs, habits, and emotions) soaking into the Earth to help heal myself and help replenish Earth at the same time. Our bodies, emotions, minds, and spirits need support from both the Heavens and Earth. When we disconnect from either we become imbalanced. Grounding ourselves helps bring us into the present so we know what we need to do for our own wellbeing. This is the foundational start to helping feel supported, and know we are taking responsibility for our own wellbeing.

If you are struggling with being able to ground and are finding it extremely difficult to shift your energies, it is possible that you are experiencing a blockage within your Root Chakra or Earth Star Chakra. A Distance Reiki Session could help clear the blockages so you can connect with Earth and create a foundational support system where you reset your nervous system naturally. There are many signs that point to an imbalance within our chakras and I have a free Chakra Knowledge printable available within the Alignment Resources. I also have a Hygge Challenge sent over email weekly, where I challenge you to use elements of the Hygge Lifestyle to connect with your soul, mind, and consciousness.

Until next time, I’m sending you all much love and support.
