Is Healthy Food Hygge | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge

Sharing is caring!

Is healthy food Hygge? This is a very good question. It’s also one that I’ve struggled with as I contemplated going on a 30-day Hygge challenge. I have a love-hate relationship with food. I love to eat it but hate the lasting effects it has on my body now that I’m older.

Do you relate?

I’m on Day 7 of my 30 days of Hygge challenge and I was to bake and cook today. Experts say that to feel Hygge you need to learn how to bake. They tell you that pastries, cakes, and other sweets are very Hygge. Why is that?

Why does one need to have a “cheat day” to feel Hygge?

What is Hygge life? Let’s look at that Hygge life again. Isn’t it about creating that comforting feeling? Creating a feeling of being home, where you can be your authentic self?

What if you don’t bake?

You’ve tried and you suck at it.

Yep, I said it!

What if that is you?

OR

What if one of your life goals this year (besides adding Hygge to your life) is to eat healthier?

Do you throw in the towel and give up because you can’t do both?

NOPE!

Is Healthy Food Hygge?

The Hygge feeling is about creating pleasure in comfort and feeling satisfied. If you are trying to eat healthier then having unhealthy options in your home to tempt you or add more guilt is not very Hygge.

I’m going to challenge you, instead, to find healthier options that follow the Rule of 5: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. It’s been proven that if the food you are eating is satisfying to your 5 senses then you will eat less, and be more mindful of the experience.

This means you will enjoy it more, and that is Hygge!

Ordering out for today’s task isn’t an option. You need to take the time to cook something yourself. Remember the Rule of 5. We have a few family favorites that we like to make that are healthier options than a cake or pastry.  They definitely follow the Rule of 5 for our family. Click on the button to download them now!

The Rule of 5

Sight – the bright colors of each ingredient.

Sound – the chopping of the vegetables during preparation, the gentle simmer of dinner on the stove

Smell – the aroma of the herbs throughout the house as dinner is cooking

The Rule of 5 for Healthy Hygge eating is using your 5 senses to take in the cooking and eating experience. It will allow you to enjoy the experience, be more mindful of the flavors and you will be much more satisfied!

Touch – the coolness from the fresh food during preparation, or the warmth from the stove or oven both remind you that you are preparing the meal with love

Taste – your favorite ingredients used in a dish that is delicious to you and your family

Is healthy food Hygge? Yes, it can be. Maybe you need to find a new recipe to change up your normal menu. Finding a healthy option that satisfies the Rule of 5 will help bring Hygge to your day. Do you need sweets to be Hygge? Not in my opinion. I actually feel more Hygge when I am making a healthy meal. There is less guilt and I’m still working towards another life goal. Bonus!

Will you take the challenge of making healthy food Hygge?
