Game Nights are Hygge | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge
When you consider what is Hygge, and look at the simplicity of having a game night with those you love, game nights are Hygge. Today was game night in the 30-days of Hygge challenge.
During a workweek.
What?! How did we do it?
You might even be thinking that you can’t do that.
I certainly was.

Family Game Night During the Work Week
Then I told myself that I had committed to this challenge so I was going to make it happen. I put it in the family schedule on our Cozi app and told the family about it (they got a notification anyway but a little extra communication doesn’t hurt for important events – right?!)
The key to making this happen during the workweek was to keep it simple. No worries about “all the things” that needed to get done. No big dinners planned. Simple and quick.
Our daughter worked through her homework before I got home, and they picked out the game of the night. We have had a few favorites over the years and I’ll share those with you below. Game of Thrones Risk is our new favorite and this is what we played for the 30 days of Hygge challenge.
Dinner was simple so we could eat and play the game at the same time. It was fun, relaxing and a great way to break up the normal work week! My daughter even posted a picture of the board game saying it was “Family game night tonight with Dad and the Mother of Dragons.”.
I love her sense of humor!
Game Nights Are Hygge
Game nights are simple and quick to pull together. You don’t need to create anything or make fancy snacks or drinks. The intention of having a game night is to play the game and connect with those you love. Simple.
The games don’t have to take super long, or they can like ours did (or still is). If they do take a long time, split it into a couple of nights and continue the fun! We have it on the table ready for family game night continued for Saturday. Nobody wanted to concede to defeat!
If the kids are small, play one of their games. Once they are in bed, create a game date night with your spouse. Have the kids moved out? Invite them or some friends over for a game night.
I just need you to promise me one thing.
Don’t. Over. Complicate. It.
Keep it simple. The game, the family or friends, laughter, and building those connections. Simple.
Sometimes when life gets busy we say we don’t have time. We do, we just create more work for ourselves than necessary. We think that we need to have a big meal, snacks, fancy drinks, and an immaculate house. When, in truth, we don’t.
We need connections with those we love more than the stress of creating that big event, especially when simplicity is possible. Game nights are Hygge and I’m challenging everyone to have one this week.
Will you accept my challenge?
