Crafting together is Hygge | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge
It’s day 28 of my 30 days of Hygge challenge and we were to do a craft together. I don’t do crafts often, mostly because I have to see a use for them after their done. They have to be a functional part of my decor or a useful planning or organization tool. I’ve come to learn through this Hygge journey that crafting together is Hygge, so how could I make this task happen?
It was the night before my daughter’s last exam of the school year and she was finishing up her final studies. Disrupting her was not an option, so I opted to delay this task.
The next night we decided to re-work a craft that we did at the beginning of the school year to help her stay organized throughout the year. She loved her DIY dry erase calendar but wanted to improve it a bit more. The old one was not as uniform for the days because it used paint strips that were uneven.
I got the idea to create a calendar template that we could get printed on 11×17 paper and she could cut the paint strips into boxes to customize it. The DIY dry erase calendar would then work better because space for each day would be more even for her planning.
Crafting Together is Hygge
I had created this new template a while ago with the idea to give it as a free resource for my followers, but I wanted to test it with my daughter first. So in our attempt to do a craft together, we set out to get the template printed and pick up some new paint strips for her calendar.
A whole $0.20 later we were home starting to rework her DIY dry-erase calendar. It took her a couple of nights to finish it but she loves it even more than the first attempt. Is it perfect? No, but she customized it herself with the colors she wanted and she did the cutting and assembly on her very own.
I love that we were able to find a craft that was functional for the family. We will often find a project that helps the family and do it together but I never knew that crafting together is Hygge until I started researching Hygge life.
Over the years we did a few crafts together that are functional for our family. The first was a simple family communication center. It was supposed to be a temporary solution to get me through some insanely busy years. Instead, it has lasted more than 10 years and had to be put up in our new home after we moved. We rely on it as a functioning part of our week now.
Last summer we transformed pallets into a recycling cabinet. I was tired of the bottles and other recycling piling up in the basement, so I designed a cabinet and we made it ourselves. It now serves as a side table and recycling cabinet on our back deck.
I’m sure over the next little while we will work on some more crafts together. If we do, you can be sure that they will be functional for the home somehow. I have plans to create some shelving out of the old wood we pulled out of the basement walls. I’d like to use them in the new bathroom we are developing and maybe in the laundry room or living room too. I love that crafting together is Hygge.
Our daughter has gained so many skills when we do projects like this together. Her construction teacher was amazed at her knowledge and she often makes a more complicated project but something that is useful for her in her room. Last year in construction she made a desk organizer, and this year she made a charging station for phone and iPod.
Crafting together is Hygge, so what will you make together?
