You Are Never Too Old for a Pillow Fort | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge
You are never too old for a pillow fort. I know what you’re thinking. “Yep, I am.” I thought this too, but I did it anyway and this happened.
It’s day 26 of my 30 days of Hygge challenge and I was tasked to build a pillow fort. I felt silly even thinking about doing it. After all, I’m a grown adult with adult children and my youngest is a teenager. There is absolutely no reason to make a pillow fort.
As I pondered skipping this task, I decided that I couldn’t take the easy way out. So I knocked on my daughter’s door and asked her if she wanted to make a pillow fort on her next study break. Her eyes lit up and she smiled brightly with a huge yes as her answer.
Shortly after she emptied her bed of pillows and came out into the living room, ready to make a pillow fort. We quickly assembled the pillow port using the dining room table. The pillows went under the table and provided a cozy hideaway for either of us today.
The pillow fort we made wasn’t the fancy fort that Sheldon and Amy made on Big Bang Theory but it was simple and I was surprised at how great I felt being in it.
You Are Never Too Old for a Pillow Fort
We finished the fort and my daughter climbed in, ready to relax. I wasn’t going to go in.
I’m too old for pillow forts.
It’s not big enough for both of us.
All the excuses I could think of to not crawl into the fort.
Then my daughter decided she needed to go study some more. I grabbed my book and crawled into the pillow fort.
Silence.
Solitude.
The feeling of being hidden away from the chaos of life.
In the fort, it was easy to forget about the world around me and “all the things” that need to get done. I cuddled into the pillows, put my feet up on a chair, and quietly read my book. I gave myself permission to have a quiet moment. In the fort, it was easy to let solitude bring inspiration to move forward with my dreams. To clarify potential next steps towards my goals.
The pillow fort brought back a flood of childhood memories. One that reminded me of pillow forts my sister and I made at our grandparent’s farm. We would fill their small living room with the fort and spend hours playing in it. I loved the solitude of a fort when I was little, and now I find it just as healing to my introvert soul.
I may just need to create a space like this permanently in our basement renovations. Maybe we should do a Harry Potter room under the stairs? It would be a perfect hideaway (Ummm healing room) on those extremely chaotic days. You are never too old for a pillow fort. It helps slow the busy mom’s brain by creating a sense of solitude around you. Try it and let me know what you thought!
