Family Hygge or Date Night | 30 Days of Hygge Challenge

Sharing is caring!

I’m going to be completely honest with you about Day 21 of my 30 days of Hygge challenge. It was super simple and had zero changes to our evening routines. This task is a regular for family Hygge or date night as an evening routine in our home.

The task today was to spend some time watching our favorite television series or a movie. Our regular routine as a family is to watch a couple of shows together that we all love. We will often discuss the episode and use certain topics to bring up life lessons with the kids.

After the kids go to bed, my husband and I will often spend the rest of the evening watching our favorites for just the two of us. This time is a regular date night together. It is our way to connect after a long day at work.

How can television be Hygge?

Family Hygge or Date Night

Have you ever spent the night watching television in a separate room, disconnected from the rest of the family? It may have been peaceful, but doing this night after night can feel lonely. Everyone needs to feel a connection with others. It is human nature. Even introverts need connections.

When the kids were growing up we valued spending time together, so we would often have family game nights or find shows that we could all watch and enjoy. This simple task of finding shows we all enjoyed, helped create a connection of common interests with each of the kids.

We may all have our own individual personalities, but we can hold conversations and often have many discussions about certain characters or movie plots. We’ve had movie date nights with our teens and we were able to sit in the theatre with them! They weren’t embarrassed to be seen with us and they were excited to see the movie with us.

Bonus!

The same goes for the simple date night with my spouse. We have common interests in shows that we watch together. Don’t get me wrong, there are shows that I will watch by myself and ones he watches himself. However, we make an effort to find a series or two to watch together. After 26 years together, we’ve been able to find a number of shows that we both enjoyed.

For the busy family, a PVR is a must! If you want to watch a television show but are never home when it airs, then a PVR saves the day every time. It is honestly the best thing since sliced bread for us. When all three kids were at home and busy with activities after school, we often missed evening shows. The PVR come the spring would be almost full and we would often have nights or weekends of binge-watching.

Cuddling up on the couch, watching our favorite shows is very Hygge. The best part of the experience though is spending that time with the family and knowing you are creating common interests and building stronger connections. Don’t have a PVR full of shows? How about Netflix or Amazon Prime?

The challenge is to find a series that you can watch together, creating a family Hygge or date night. Will you be able to find something? Try out a series. As the kids grow you will be able to expand the choices. Don’t forget to create a date night with your spouse after the kids are in bed. It’s simple but effective in connecting with each other.
