How to Bring Nature Indoors

During my 30 days of Hygge challenge, I was tasked to add texture to home decor. The Danes take pride in creating a comfortable home that may seem modest to some but it encourages relaxation. Bringing natural elements into the home decor will help create a Hygge home. Today’s task, day 18, was to bring nature indoors.

When you are trying to bring nature indoors, one might think you need to have a green thumb. After all, plants are nature. If you have trouble keeping plants alive, like me, then you will be happy to know there are other ways to bring nature indoors.

Here are a few ideas when learning how to bring nature indoors:

  • Natural flooring and natural tone area rugs
  • Plants (if you have a green thumb)
  • Sheer curtains to encourage natural light
  • Earth tone paint for your walls
  • Wood furniture pieces
  • Flowers
  • Nature in Decorative Pieces – Rocks, Glass, Wood, Sand, Wicker, Stone, etc.

We have a few of these in our home and they add comfort. One decorative piece that I have surprised me as being Hygge. This piece serves more than just a decoration and most won’t know why I have it. Are you curious?

I have a pair of square glass vases that contain rocks. Each rock is a milestone in a life goal that I’ve set. One vase holds rocks for each milestone left to accomplish in that goal, while the other holds rocks for each milestone I’ve achieved. It’s a visual reminder of how far I’ve come and to keep going. Now it has an added benefit of adding to our Hygge decor.

Whether you have a green thumb or not, there are many ways to bring nature indoors. Start small and slowly add more to your home to create your perfect Hygge home.
