3 Life Lessons from Old Dominion | Helping Families Know Life Is Good Together

Sharing is caring!

Old Dominion’s song, “No Such Thing As A Broken Heart”, is one of our family favorites. It is not only a catchy tune but there are 3 life lessons from Old Dominion embedded in the lyrics.

When you can find a song that helps you parent teens it can be a lifesaver. This song hit the radio waves when we had a teen recovering from a heartbreak. It was the perfect way to engage in a conversation to help him through it and open up conversations with our other kids.

As busy parents sometimes we are overwhelmed with life and it can be hard to notice the little signs that we need to reconnect with family. Is it time to slow life down but you don’t know how?

In the meantime, I’d thought I’d share a few lyrics so that you can see what I mean by the life lessons from Old Dominion.

Lesson 1: Marriage

“How did my mom and my dad ever do it
If there were troubles then we never knew it
I guess they had each other and that was enough”

Leaning on one another during hard times and knowing that you have each other is enough. You don’t need material things to be happy. Love each other and work through the troubling times together.

Lesson 2: Life Lessons in the Chorus

“You know you can’t keep the ground from shaking, no matter how hard you try,
You can’t keep the sunsets from fading, you gotta treat you love like
You’re jumping off a rope swing maybe ’cause the whole thing is really just a shot in the dark
You gotta love like there’s no such thing as a broken heart”

Life sometimes sucks and you can’t stop things from happening but you have to live your life and not be afraid to enjoy it. Love, take chances and keep trying.

Lesson 3: Coaching The Kids

“What am I gonna tell my kids when they see
All of this bullshit that goes down on TV
When the whole world is down on its luck
I gotta make sure they keep that chin up
Cry when it hurts, laugh when it’s funny
Chase after the dream, don’t chase after the money
And know we got each other, that’s what’s up”

Bad stuff happens and the media loves negative news. All that matters is that they know that they can:
  • bad stuff happens but you can get through it
  • cry when you are hurting
  • laughter is the best medicine
  • work towards the dream – life is too short to work at a job you don’t love
  • family is home – we have each other!

These life lessons from Old Dominion have helped us open many conversations with the kids and we continue to reconnect over the song. On road trips all conversations stop, the radio is cranked and we all sing along every time this song is played.

This their video – Warning! It’s catchy so you might just start singing along! It’s one of those windows-down-start-singing-and-don’t-care-who-hears-kind-of-songs!
