When your grandparents hold loving memories that reflect their names and a couple of chocolate bars.

Sweet Memories #Hyggeit

Sharing is caring!

Years ago while trying to figure out what chocolate bar to choose, my Mom told me a story about her parents. It was one of those moments where I can see her smile and hear her laugh as she began remembering her own sweet memory of this story. Memories and how they make you feel are hyggelig. They just warms the soul.

I wasn’t going to write today, but this memory came up for me as I reached for an Oh Henry bar. It never takes long for the memory of what I saw, through my mom’s memory, to come into my own mind. What was that sweet memory, I’ll share with you and hopefully you can find some sweet memories of your own that may warm your heart and soul.

Sweet Memories

The story my mom told me years ago, was when my Grandma was in the hospital my Grandpa came to visit her. When he walked into the room he handed her a Sweet Marie. Grandma’s middle name was Marie. Mom said that Grandma laughed and then said, “Oh Henry”. If I know my Grandpa Henry well, he would have laughed and his eyes would have been sparkling at this fun gesture of love for Grandma.

The chocolate bar combination was a set moment of love shared between them. One that I believe continued as the kids grew up. I’ve even tried to remember to tell my children this story, as a way to show the loving humor and connection my Grandma and Grandpa V had for each other.

It’s funny how a simple sweet gesture between grandparents in one moment can come to mind when a little girl looks upon the chocolate bar selection at store, while her mom smiles, laughs, and begins a story saying, “Sweet Marie” “Oh Henry”.

It funny how the same thing can happen more than 40 years later reaching into a bowl of halloween candy for that small little taste of an Oh Henry. In those moments I think of my Grandpa as he spent time with me growing up. The races down the street or playing catch. I think about my Grandma in the kitchen or garden. I think about the hugs and my mom’s love for them both.

I think about shared memories with my cousins and the love within our family during those times.

Grandparents, my grandparents, were a glue for our family. They are missed and loved.

I may not be the only one in the family to find myself in this space of remembrance, but it is a blessing to know that it isn’t a waste of time to sit in this comfort. Hygge taught me this.

#HyggeIt

To #hyggeit means to develop a relationship with your soul experiences. It is a way to know yourself, and the life you love; a way to be more present with what matters in your life. When you are able to see something so simple as a chocolate bar and allow the flood of memories to come through. You know love. You know you’ve experienced it. You know what matters to you, and what matter within those memories.

My wish for you is to find a sweet memory and share it with those you love (and me if you choose to do so).

As for me and my Oh Henry…I silently wished I could find a Sweet Marie as I enjoyed every small bite of the Oh Henry. While nothing can replace my grandparents, having this memory and something to initiate it, is something I am grateful for. Life can be busy, but when we find ways to see those memories through various means whether it is a picture, furniture, something made by hand, or a chocolate bar we are gifted in those moments, time to reflect upon memories we may never take the time to reflect upon.
